Building Confidence To Create Momentum
After a great weekend in Aurora a few weeks ago, we have stumbled a little bit in recent regular season games.
A recent bright spot was against Kitchener where we dominated and held them to a 2-2 for the majority of the game. We dug hard in the corners, made good passes, and played well as a team for the most part.
Our inconsistency turns against us when we are down by a goal or two. We are an emotional team in so many ways that sometimes gets the best of us. Not just the players, but the coaches too. Where we have scored first or taken the lead in the early part of the game, we have played well, together, AS A TEAM. This confidence creates momentum.
Regardless of the opponent, we need to compete. Control, discipline, and a consistent work ethic will win games for us. As we repeatedly point out in practice, in the dressing room, or on the bench, first to the puck gains control and determines the next move.
If you envision yourself as a leader on the ice, then work with those around you to control the play. Manage the distance between you, the puck, and the attacking player. Use the neutral zone as your target area to collapse the play and turn the puck over. Those who can turn the puck over and apply pressure in the offensive zone will be the ones to help put the puck in the net. This helps create confidence and builds momentum, not just for you, but for the rest of the team.
It must be noted that a couple of players have really stepped up their game in recent weeks. Keep it up, it is certainly being noticed by the coaching staff. We need to get everyone on the team on the same page and play like a team. Individuals who don't see it the same way as everyone else don't always get the ice time they hoped. Work hard and it's there for you. Ice time is earned, not a right.
To help re-group, re-strategize, and get us back on track, I have set up an exhibition game for Saturday, January 19th at Oakridge Arena. Puck drops at 520pm, please be at the arena for 430pm. Please make sure to bring your black jersey and socks as we may wear our tourney uniforms. We will see what the opposing team brings.
Time to shine boys. Bring your 'A Game' on Saturday night. You need to GIVE 110.
See you at the rink.
